This is a weird question: when is the last time you smelled your dog or cat’s breath? What was it like?

If it brought tears to your eyes or singed your nose hairs, chances are your pet needs to have their teeth checked out and possibly cleaned by Dr. Holliday and Tiffany.

The unfortunate truth is that many pet owners believe that dental cleanings are purely cosmetic and there’s no real purpose in having it done. Imagine this for a second: you are 30 years old, and you have NEVER brushed your teeth in your entire life. Now, try to imagine the bacteria and disease and decay that’s taking over your mouth and weaseling its way into your bloodstream. Your kidneys, heart, brain, liver, and other organs begin to suffer and fail because of the conditions in your mouth.

Now, take a look at your pet, chances are you’ve never brushed their teeth and even if the groomer brushes them, it’s only once every two weeks to a month that you bring your pet in. It’s better than nothing, but really it’s not adequate. We, as humans, brush our teeth daily and even still, we need professional dental cleanings yearly.

We’re running a special offer on dental cleanings during February (Dental Month) that you definitely don’t want to miss! We’re offering you $75 off your pet’s dental cleaning. We are doing dentals on Wednesdays (but have overflow days available) during February, so hurry and call to schedule and take advantage of this awesome deal!

A routine dental, meaning no extractions or other dental concerns, is around $300-$400. With the discounts and rebates during February, you could pay as little as $225 to extend your pet’s life by a few years! That’s a great, great, GREAT deal!

If you’re pet is over 3 years old, please add $66 to $96 for required bloodwork. Extractions vary from $10 to $60 depending on the tooth needing to be pulled, and antibiotics and pain medication (if needed) are also additional. Gas anesthesia over 30 minutes is $2 a minute, within reason.

We understand that everyone is trying to recover from Christmas, and so we want to again remind all of you that we offer Care Credit , who will gladly help you pay for this procedure. Please email us or call if you have any other questions or concerns!

Don’t forget, there are only 9 slots left to take advantage of that $75 off! Schedule today!

Kadie was our first ‘clinic cat’. She was rescued by Dr. Holliday in 2009. She was pretty quiet and kept to herself, unless you opened a can of food or sprinkled catnip on the floor. Then she REALLY came alive. Sometimes you’d catch a glimpse of her walking through the exam rooms, but mostly she stayed pretty content sleeping in the various kitty beds we have around the clinic.

Last night was especially hard on us all, as we decided that Kadie had been sick long enough. For the past few weeks, she was losing weight, not eating, and really not herself. Dr. Holliday felt that Kadie had endured the horrible effects of cancer long enough. She let her go peacefully, even though we were all heartbroken.

Kadie will forever be missed by all of us…

You may have heard or seen all this hype about Pet Armor, the new generic Frontline. Apparently, it carried the same active ingredients as Frontline Plus, but the rest of the ingredients were different. However, the courts have ordered seizure of ALL Pet Armor and it’s destruction within 60 days. It is also no longer allowed to be sold in the US.

Macon, Ga. – A U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia ruled that sales of PetArmor™ Plus by Cipla Ltd. and Velcera Inc. infringed on Merial’s patents covering its flea-and-tick product FRONTLINE Plus®.

In fact, the court barred the two companies from further sales of PetArmor Plus in the United States and ordered the seizure of existing inventory starting in the next 60 days.

Cipla vowed today to appeal the decision, according to reports.

However, U.S. District Judge Clay D. Land found Cipla in contempt of a March 6, 2008 order prohibiting the company from infringing on Merial’s patents.

The court ruled that both pet-health companies were aware that their sales of PetArmor™ Plus products infringed Merial’s patent and barred those two companies from further sales of these products in the United States.

According to Land’s decision, “The court orders Cipla and Velcera to produce to Merial for destruction all inventory existing in the United States of any veterinary products manufactured by Cipla that contain fipronil and methoprene, including but not limited to the veterinary products that contain fipronil and methoprene sold under the brand names Protektor Plus, PetArmor Plus, TrustGard Plus and Velcera Fipronil Plus.”

In addition, Land said he would conduct a hearing regarding damages and monetary sanctions that may be appropriate “based on Velcera and Cipla’s violation of the court’s order.” The hearing will be to determine an award to Merial for damages relating “to all sales committed in violation of the court’s order.”

“We are pleased that the court recognized the ‘contumacious’ nature of Velcera and Cipla’s conduct and prevented them from further violating Merial’s intellectual property rights,” says Merial Executive Chairman José Barella in a prepared statement. “Merial has invested considerable time and resources developing its flagship FRONTLINE Plus® products, and is confident that Judge Land’s well-reasoned order will be affirmed. Merial is committed to continuing its support of the veterinary profession and will continue to vigorously enforce its patents covering FRONTLINE Plus® products.”

Macon, Ga.

Exactly one year ago today, we met at Dr. Holliday’s house for the last time. We were incredibly nervous and scared, but we were hopeful. The three of us had worked together for many, many years, and we knew that we could lean on each other if we needed to. But, we’d never had a clinic of our own. We’ve never had to be the backbone. This was certainly an experience we didn’t want to pass up, and we were grateful that she chose us to come with her.

It was March 15, 2010 that we opened up the hospital for the first time. We turned on all the computers, turned on all the lights, and stood in the treatment area. ‘This is it,’ we thought to ourselves, ‘We’re on our own.’ There were so many thoughts and worries and emotions rushing through our heads; we each felt overwhelmed, but also relieved. The hardest part was over now, and it was time to shine.

In this past year, we’ve sailed through a stormy sea a time or two, but for the most part it has been smooth sailing. We have no one to thank for that except all of you, our clients. You guys have put a faith and trust in us, and have brought your beloved pets in to do the same. We hope, day after day, that we continue to live up to your expectations and exceed them.

Many of you have recommended us to your friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, and even some strangers you’ve never met. Referrals are the absolute best compliment you can give us. So, to finish up with this mushy stuff, we want to make sure all of you know and understand that you are what has made our first year successful. We love you guys, and we love your pets, and we hope that you all will continue to believe in us and what we do. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Phew! Okay…I was beginning to think that was going to turn into a sappy tear-jerker! Let’s get to the fun part!

You’re invited to our first EVER birthday party! Although the hospital officially turns one tomorrow, we’re having a celebration on Saturday, April 2nd. The party is during our normal business hours, 8:30am to 12:30pm.

We’re going to have cupcakes and cookies! And, we’re going bring out the Birthday Bucket! I’m sure many of you remember the Birthday Bucket! We brought it out for Dr. Holliday’s birthday in January. It’s going to have HUGE discounts, money off coupons, and even some free stuff! For those that don’t remember, you basically swing by, dip your hand in the bucket, and pull out a piece of paper. On that piece of paper will tell you what you’ve drawn and unlike last time, you’ll have longer expiration dates to those coupons and such.

We’re also going to have a very special guest attending! Well, actually, quite a few special guests! Coldspring Stars Rescue is going to be out here with us with homeless dogs that need homes! They’re going to have all shapes, sizes, breeds, and colors, so please stop by and see them! Even if you can’t adopt one, I’m sure all the doggies would appreciate your scrubbies and attention!

If you’ve come by the clinic in the past week, you’ve most likely seen a little black fluffy dog sleeping by the front windows. Or maybe he sauntered blindly through your exam room. You might have even heard him huffing away as he walks aimlessly through the clinic. His name is Pepper.

You may have asked about him, where he came from, or who he belongs to. Some of you were moved by his story, and many of you may not even know his story yet. Not only is this his official introduction to you, but also a story about one of the best human beings we’ve ever met.

Pepper’s human-mom passed away 3 years ago right at Christmas. Pepper’s human-dad…I don’t really know that ‘broken hearted’ is the appropriate adjective. I have never seen a human grieve so much in my whole life. Now, don’t get me wrong, Pepper’s daddy was always so happy and cheerful. He was never in a bad mood, and he could talk to you for hours and hours. He was truly an inspirational human being, to be in such misery, but still give thanks and keep on the sunny-side. One could only hope to be as kind and loving as him…I can’t even describe the aura he has around him.

Pepper and his dad drive around all day long, a man and his dog, to avoid all the wife’s things at home. She must have been an amazing woman for she was truly, truly loved by this man. His eyes would light up with the very mention of her. For three years, they remain on the roads around town, even when gas was astronomically high in price. They’re only home at night, and in the mornings before they begin their driving. Pepper’s dad also told us how he and Pepper would visit his wife’s grave in Conroe every day. He explained how Pepper knew (even though he cannot see well), he knew exactly which tombstone to go to without being led as they had visited so often.

These two were best friends. Pepper’s dad revolved around Pepper. If Pepper wanted, Pepper got, and in return, Pepper gave him the companionship that he so desperately needed.

Pepper’s dad seemed particularly sad one day when he came in for Pepper’s recheck appointment. I’m not sure how the subject came up, but he expressed a concern that if he passed away, who would care for Pepper?

This man had touched our lives for many, many years. He was more than our client, he was a true friend and he was a man that we could never forget. It was this day that we made a promise to him with tear filled eyes. In the event that Pepper’s dad goes home to be with his wife, we would take care of Pepper like our own until it was Pepper’s time.

He left a note at his house and told his neighbor’s that if ANYTHING happened to him, Pepper was to be taken to our clinic. The pair continued to visit every few weeks, and the thought of losing Pepper’s dad had disappeared from our minds.

On Saturday, December 18th, we saw in the Conroe Courier that Pepper’s dad had passed away.

Of course, we were all in tears because we loved this man like family. We wondered what happened to Pepper because it was our promise to him to make sure the dog was taken care of. I think it’s safe to say that we were seriously stressing about it, because we knew how important Pepper was to his dad.

A few days after the funeral, the clinic received a call regarding Pepper. Pepper was brought in to our clinic that day, and he became ours.

So, that is Pepper’s story, and how he came to be with us and why Pepper has a very, very special place in our hearts…

This is a great testimony from a local Houstonian and her experience with Trupanion Pet Insurance.

I have had my Jezebel since she was a 5 months old kitten. I found her at the Valero gas station on Memorial Drive close to downtown. She is 7 yrs old now. I don’t have any kids, so she is MY fur baby.

I got pet insurance almost as a fluke. I had been thinking about my cat Chelsea that had passed away 10 years ago from lymphoma. I was at work and googled pet insurance and then started comparing them. I decided on Trupanion because they had no deductible and paid 90%. I didn’t purchase this insurance for regular vet check ups or minor office visits like a little cut on her chin. I didn’t even send that claim in. I purchased insurance for worst case scenario. Never did I think I would have to use it.

Six months after I signed Jezebel up with Trupanion my worst nightmare came true. She was diagnosed with vaccine related fibro sarcoma on her right hip. One day she was fine the next day there was a huge tumor. It appeared out of nowhere. She was initially diagnosed at my local vet Jones Road Animal Hospital. They referred her to Gulf Coast Vet Assoc.’s oncology dept. I was so scared. My immediate thought was the insurance is not going to pay for this. Its going to be a problem. I had only been signed up for about six months. They will say she already had it. I even asked the vet was it possible that she had this for 6 months and I didn’t notice. He said no. I scheduled Jezebel’s surgery and treatments without knowing if Trupanion would pay or not.

I collected Jezebel’s medical records from Jones Road and The Cat Vet Clinic and submitted them to Trupanion. Teresa Lee was assigned as my claims adjuster. She left me a voice mail that she would need to review Jezebel’s records prior to approving the claim. I was scared. I was sure my claim would be denied and that meant death for Jezebel. In under 10 days my claim was approved. I couldn’t believe it was that easy. And it only got easier from that point.

Jezebel had surgery to remove her leg and part of her pelvic bone the week of July 4, 2010. After surgery she started 3x per week radiation on the tumor site and 1x every 3 weeks chemo treatment for the next several months. I paid my bill, submitted the claim to Trupanion on a Monday and received a check in the mail by Saturday. Teresa would receive my claim email me and have the check approved all in the same day. Teresa Lee is a GREAT claim adjuster. If I could hug her I would.

Jezebel’s medical team was aware from the beginning that she had insurance with Trupanion. It helped so much that I didn’t have to decide what treatments could and could not be done because they were too expensive. She received all the treatments that were necessary to cure her. Jezebel just had her most recent check up in November 2010 and is doing GREAT!!!!!

Dr. Gumpel was her doctor at Gulf Coast that administered the radiation treatments. He mentioned to me that another client came in with a pet that had cancer and told him they had Trupanion insurance but had never used it. Of course they were worried like I was that it might not pay. Dr. Gumpel told him about Jezebel and told him that I don’t think you have anything to worry about we have had a very good experience with Trupanion.

Trupanion saved my Jezebel’s life. If I had not had the insurance she would not be here today. Trupanion has paid over $15,000 so far for her treatments. She is currently cancer free!!! I can honestly say it has been the best $30 per month investment I have ever made. I would have been happy to pay $30 per month for the next 20 years and never have had to use the insurance. I can honestly say I am Trupanion’s biggest fan! If you have any questions about getting your pet insured with Trupanion feel free to email me. I will tell you personally about my experience. I have my kitty. Thanks Trupanion.

Did you know that cats can get Heartworms, too? It only takes one single heartworm to prove fatal in a cat; that’s why keeping both dogs and cats on year round heartworm prevention is so important.
